How to Store: Leafy Greens
Leafy greens are delicate, but with the right storage they can stay crisp and usable for a full week — sometimes longer.
The key is balancing moisture, airflow, and cold.
The 4 Simple Rules
1. Store Cold
Leafy greens keep best at 32–40°F.
Use the crisper drawer with high humidity.
2. Keep Them Dry (But Not Too Dry)
Excess moisture causes sliminess.
Too little moisture causes wilting.
3. Don’t Wash Until Ready (or Dry Very Well)
If you wash first, dry completely before storing.
4. Give Them Air
Avoid sealed plastic bags unless you add airflow or a paper towel.
How to Store Different Greens
Tender Greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula):
Store unwashed in a container or produce bag with a dry paper towel. Lasts 5–7 days.Hardy Greens (kale, chard, collards):
Wrap stems in a damp towel and place in a bag or container. Lasts 7–10 days.Herbs:
Treat like flowers — trim stems, stand in a jar with a little water, loosely cover, refrigerate.
Quick Revive Tip
Wilted greens can often be revived with a 10–15 minute ice water soak, then dried and stored properly.
A little care goes a long way — fresh greens mean quicker meals, less waste, and more nourishment all week long 🥬
