What’s in Season in Vista, CA?

A Guide to Eating with the Farm

One of the most beautiful things about farming in Vista, California is the rhythm of the seasons.

Unlike colder regions, North County San Diego gives us a long growing window — meaning there’s always something fresh coming out of the field.

Winter in Vista: Citrus & Greens

While much of the country is frozen, our farm is bursting with oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and tangelos. Kale, broccoli, carrots, and other cool-season crops thrive in our mild coastal winters.

This is the season of soups, salads, and bright citrus dressings.

Spring: Fresh & Sweet

Spring brings blueberries,, loquats, fresh herbs, and tender greens. It’s the season of light meals, farmers market bouquets, and the first taste of sweetness after winter.

Summer: Peak Harvest

Summer is abundance.

Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, squash, peaches, plums, blackberries — the trees and bushes are overflowing. This is when eating local makes the biggest difference in flavor.

There’s nothing like a tomato picked the same morning.

Fall: Cozy & Colorful

As evenings cool, avocados, pumpkins, pomegranates, persimmons, and winter squash take center stage. Greens begin returning, and citrus starts its comeback.

It’s a transition season — warm days, crisp nights, and deeply nourishing food.

Why Seasonal Eating Matters

When you eat with the seasons:

  • Produce tastes better

  • Nutrients are higher

  • Food travels fewer miles

  • You reconnect with natural rhythms

At Sand n Straw, our CSA members experience this shift week by week — watching the boxes change as the fields change.

If you’re curious about what’s growing right now, join our CSA or stop by the farm stand. The season is always moving.
