Sand n Straw Community Farm Featured by Hidden San Diego

A Local Farm Growing Food, Learning, and Community in Vista, CA

We’re honored to share that Sand n Straw Community Farm was recently featured by Hidden San Diego as one of Vista’s unique places to visit.

When you farm quietly, day in and day out, recognition isn’t something you expect. So seeing our land, our programs, and our community reflected in someone else’s words felt deeply meaningful.

Hidden San Diego highlighted Sand n Straw as more than a stop for produce — noting the farmstand and café, the family-friendly atmosphere, and the Young Pioneers Farm School where children learn outdoors through gardening, cooking, and animal care.

That story matters to us, because it’s what the farm was built for.

A Working Farm in Vista, California

Sand n Straw is a six-acre community farm located in Vista, CA, shaped slowly over time through regenerative growing practices and seasonal rhythms.

We grow food that thrives here:

  • Citrus, greens, and roots in winter

  • Berries, herbs, and tender crops in spring

  • Tomatoes, melons, peppers, and squash in summer

  • Avocados, pumpkins, pomegranates, and winter squash in fall

Vista’s mild coastal climate allows for a long growing season, but we still let the land set the pace. Not everything grows all year — and we’ve learned that honoring those limits leads to better food and healthier soil.

🐐 Learning Through the Land

As Hidden San Diego shared, Sand n Straw is also home to Young Pioneers Farm School, a nature-based program where children spend their days outdoors.

Here, learning happens through:

  • Gardening and food preparation

  • Caring for animals

  • Exploring ecosystems

  • Working with their hands

The farm also hosts tours, workshops, and seasonal events for the wider community — created not as attractions, but as invitations to learn where food comes from.

🍅 Food Grown and Shared Onsite

The Hidden San Diego feature mentioned the farmstand and café, and we’re grateful for that visibility.

What makes the farmstand special isn’t variety for variety’s sake — it’s freshness. Everything offered there is grown right here on the farm and reflects what’s in season that week.

For those who want a deeper relationship with the harvest, Sand n Straw offers a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, where members receive a weekly or biweekly share of what’s thriving in the fields.

Each box is different. Each season is different.

That’s farming.
